Market value

Island Market is an indoor market in South Hobart specialising in new products, including Tasmanian wine and olive products. There is an olive-processing plant on site, so you watch the processing of tasty, fresh Tasmanian olive oil. Olive oil and wine tastings are available, and this market also sells seafood – including abalone and rock lobster – other fresh produce and prepared foods, bakery products, clothing and crafts. The Hobart bike track also passes by, so you can cycle there. The market is currently open every Sunday from 10am-4pm and is due to open on Friday and Saturday afternoons as well. Island Market, 54-56 Gormanston Road, Moonah, Hobart.

Go fish

Mures Fish Centre is a Hobart institution on the fishermen’s wharf. As well as dining in at the à la carte restaurant upstairs or the fishing-boat level bistro, the centre has a range of seafood to buy to take back to your accommodation or as you tour the island. These include smoked-salmon pates, terrines, roulades and a range of classic seafood soups. Even if you are not buying, the mongers display in the bistro is worth seeing. Mures Fish Centre, Victoria Dock, Hobart.

Savour the south-west

Savour a stunning and remote environment – reached by a 50 minute flight over soaring mountains and some of the most rugged coastline – which was once home to one of Tasmania’s early conservationists. Par Avion has a range of options, including a two night tour with highlights such as landing at Melaleuca to see the endangered orange-bellied parrot and cruising the waterways of Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour.

Local tastes at the Lark Distillery

A unique taste of Tasmania, the Bush Liqueur was created by Bill Lark of the Lark Distillery using Tasmania’s native mountain pepperberries. The liqueur is also blended with local Gillespies Ginger Beer to make 2UP, a ginger beer with a difference. Other specialties include a single-malt whisky, apple schnapps, bush liqueur, cherry max, pepperberry vodka and pepperberry gin. Lark Distillery, 14 Davey Street, Hobart.
