Lakes Entrance’s watery delights

Gippsland

Think of great summer activities and boating, fishing, surfing and swimming instantly come to mind. And there’s no better place for all four experiences than Lakes Entrance.

>> Destination Gippsland, Weekends For Two

Located on the edge of Ninety Mile Beach where the Gippsland Lakes meet the Southern Ocean, there’s a plethora of water activities on offer.

Ninety Mile BeachCross the footbridge to the Ninety Mile Beach surf beach and you’ll find fantastic surfing conditions. Or take a leisurely stroll to the entrance of the Gippsland Lakes.

Keen fishermen are equally well catered for. The man-made entrance allows the ocean to mingle with the lakes and thus creates a safe harbour for what is said to be one of the largest fishing fleets in Australia.

If you love fresh fish you can either catch your own (both surf and lake fishing are on offer) or allow one of the many restaurants located along the foreshore
to do the work for you.

Similarly you can explore the lakes on your own, by hiring a boat or driving to scenic vantage points.

There’s no doubt boating is the best way to explore the lakes. Generally light winds and a lack of rocks, reefs or tides means they are great for pleasure boating. You can hire a yacht or cruiser from one of the local boat operators, let one of the local operators take you on a tour and show you the best of the lakes and rivers. Waterskiing equipment can also be hired.

For land lovers there are great drives and vantage points to appreciate the beauty of the area.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll quickly appreciate the beauty and grandeur of the lakes. Covering around 400 square kilometres, they form the largest enclosed waterway on the Australian continent and are truly a Victorian icon.
